Athletic hosts First Minister of Wales at Ibaigane

Eluned Morgan, First Minister of Wales, visited Athletic headquarters in a meeting that highlighted Wales' historical ties with the Basque Country and the memory of the Basque Children evacuated to Newport in 1937

On Friday morning, Athletic Club welcomed an institutional delegation from Wales, led by First Minister Eluned Morgan, to Palacio Ibaigane as part of their official visit to the Basque Country.

The meeting served to highlight the historical and human ties between the two nations, with special attention paid to the legacy of the Basque Children of '37, who were taken in by Wales during the Spanish Civil War.

The delegation was hosted by institutional representatives of Athletic Club, led by Vice-President Nerea Ortiz and Director General Jon Berasategi, in an event that included a tour of Palacio Ibaigane and a subsequent meeting in the boardroom. During the visit, they discussed the historical relationship between Wales and the Basque Country, in addition to role sport and culture can play as elements of heritage and connection between communities.

This meeting forms part of the initiative launched last summer with Newport County that paid tribute to the Basque children exiled to Wales in 1937, a collabortion that has strengthened the institutional and cultural ties between the two nations. As part of Friday's event, the Welsh delegation presented Athletic Club with a gift in memory of this historic relationship.

Representatives from the Basque Government and the UK Basque Children of '37 Association were also present, underlining the institutional and commemorative nature of a meeting that reinforces Athletic Club's commitment to its history, values and international outlook.

The Welsh delegation's visit to Ibaigane followed the renewal of the 'Memorandum of Understanding' signed by Wales and the Basque Country on Thursday.
