Valverde: “The Copa is a source of motivation for all”

The gaffer is expecting a tough first leg at San Mames, but reminded everyone that it won't be the "decisive" game in the semi-final tie

Ernesto Valverde reiterated that his Lions are highly motivated to take a step forward towards reaching the Copa del Rey final when they take on Real Sociedad in the first leg of their semi-final tie at San Mames on Wednesday night.

The coach, preparing for his fifth Copa semi-final as Athletic Club boss, doesn't think the San Mames fixture will "be decisive", especially "given that recent derbies have been fairly evenly matched".

"The Copa is a source of motivation for all of us," he said at his pre-match press conference.

"We hope to be at our best. It's a great semi-final, two derbies in a row, and lots of excitement for the fans. I'm expecting a great atmosphere at San Mames."

Whilst confirming that Alex Padilla will start in goal, the head coach that the derby will have an added element of tension given it's a knockout tie, not a league fixture.

“Rather than their ID cards, I look at their ultrasound scans. We want to see those who are completely healthy. I don't want anyone who is unfit. Experience is always a plus, but young people have more energy," the gaffer said about his potential matchday squad.

"When you play against Real Sociedad in a derby you always have to be alert in the duels. They're a good team that are strong in several areas.

"Every goal counts. It's a match where we have to be 100 percent focused, knowing the importance of every moment."

Ernesto confirmed that he is happy with the appointment of Jose María Sánchez Martínez as referee, describing his as "a great referee, one of the best".
