Valverde: "This match against Rayo is a top priority"

The gaffer said he wants Athletic "to build on our recent good form" before Saturday's clash at Vallecas

Ernesto Valverde reiterated that beating Rayo Vallecano at Vallecas on Saturday (14:00 CET) is a "top priority" as the Lions look to keep their LaLiga winning streak going.

Athletic Club are unbeaten in their last four fixtures and head to Madrid on the back of three consecutive league victories.

"We've had a long week at last," Valverde said at the start of his pre-match press conference in reference to the fact Athletic haven't played a midweek clash, giving the squad more time to rest and prepare for Saturday.

"This match against Rayo is a top priority. After picking up 10 points from the last 12, winning at Vallecas would be a great way to build on our recent form and pull further clear of the relegation zone.

"We know the teams above us aren't far ahead, but we're just focused on getting the three points."

The Rojiblanco coach highlighted Rayo's distinctive character, describing them as an opponent that boasts a loyal and passionate home crowd, just like Athletic.

He said: "It's a stadium we like to go to due to the atmosphere created by the Rayo fans and because our supporters are always well received.

"What's more, Rayo connect really well with their fans and play with a lot of spirit. In that sense, they're similar to us."

The Madrid--based outfit have struggled in LaLiga this season, but the gaffer pointed to their European form as a warning of their ability, saying: "They're getting good results in the Conference League. The further you advance, the more momentum you gain in other competitions too."
