Valverde: “We have a lot to do in LaLiga”

The gaffer told the press he wants Athletic to use Saturday's clash against Barça as a chance to "move forward"

Ernesto Valverde sees Saturday's match against FC Barcelona as an opportunity to bounce back from disappointment in the Copa and gain momentum in LaLiga.

The Lions were knocked out of the Copa on Wednesday night but are on a five-match unbeaten streak in the league.

"Winning tomorrow would be a tremendous boost," Valverde said at his pre-match press conference.

"We've played tough matches at San Mamés against important opponents, and they've meant a lot in terms of morale. It's a good opportunity for us.

"This is chance to redeem ourselves and give ourselves some satisfaction, knowing how difficult it is. We have a lot to do in LaLiga."

The gaffer reiterated that the Lions face the toughest of challenges against league leaders and reigning champions FC Barcelona. However, he is confident have a chance to pull of an upset.

He said: "We have to be very clinical. They give you chances, but it's not easy to convert them. We know how they play.

"We've picked up points in our last five LaLiga matches. Eleven out of fifteen points at a very difficult time, and we still have work to do."

Saturday's clash is one of the standout fixtures of the season at San Mames and Valverde is hopeful the Athletic can use it to "move foward".

"It's true that we really wanted to progress in the Copa," he added. "We reached the semi-finals, but we have to accept our opponents' success.

"I expect the fans to be there as always, ready to enjoy a good game. We'll work hard to engage them.

"We still have a lot of games ahead of us, so we have to stay focused on everything."
