Valverde: “The result is fair. Girona were the better side”

Ernesto Valverde admitted Girona "deserved" to win Saturday's clash at Montivili, whilst criticising whis side's peformance, especially the first-half.

The hosts capitalised on a poor start by Athletic and some defensive errors to win 3-0.

“Girona deserved the victory because they were the better side,” Valverde said about the defeat post-match.

“Our performance was lacklustre. Our opponents have often been the better side at the start of matches, especially away from home.

"We’re struggling. It’s a real blow for us given how much we were looking forward to this match."

It was a step backwards for Athletic, as their lack of consistency in both performance and results continues.

Valverde said: “Our attacking numbers aren’t good this season. It’s not enough to meet the targets we set ourselves.

"We’re a team that needs to create a lot of chances to score goals, and we’re converting fewer of them this year. We’re lacking quality, energy and determination.

"We’re feeling the strain of the season and failing to meet expectations. With ten LaLiga matches remaining, we have to face up to it."
