Bio
Left-back Mikel Balenziaga has racked up almost 300 appearances in the red and white across two different spells at the club. He is now considered one of the squad’s elder statesmen.

The full-back from Zumarraga first arrived at Athletic Club in 2008 and former coach Joaquin Caparrós handed Balenziaga his first-team debut in a LaLiga game against Malaga CF on September 14, 2008.

After falling behind in the pecking order, he was loaned out to Numancia in 2009-10 and eventually sold to Valladolid, where he would spend two seasons.

However, coach Ernesto Valverde brought Balenziaga back to San Mamés and made him a Lion again. He’s been a mainstay in the Athletic Club squad ever since, although he has seen his opportunities reduced since Yuri Berchiche’s arrival in 2018-2019.

Nonetheless, Balenziaga continues to demonstrate that he is an exemplary professional and a vital component in the Athletic Club squad.

When called upon, the left-back never lets his teammates down and still performs at the highest level. In addition to being a reliable and consistent performer, he is a perfect role model for younger players due to his attitude and work-ethic.

Although Balenziaga has lined up for Athletic Club in 217 LaLiga matches, he has only scored once. A fine effort against Sevilla FC on Matchday six of the 2016-17 season.
