Athletic lose to Real Madrid CF
Las Rojiblancas conceded two goals in the first half, allowing Madrid to dominate the game
Athletic Club Women lost 0-3 to Real Madrid on Matchday 4 of Liga F. Lezama was a full house for the fixture as the Club paid tribute to the Women's side's first players in celebration of the team's upcoming 20th anniversary.
There was little action in the first half, the visitors taking the lead through Nahikari García, the midfielder capitalising on a defensive mistake around the half hour mark. Athletic did their best to react, Marta Unzué sending an effort wide.
Before the break, Real Madrid doubled their lead through Athenea del Castilloa. The 2-0 scoreline was a blow but the Lionesses did not give up.
Lezama kept encouraging their players and Iraia Iturregi's team came out bravely in the second half, Eunate threatening with a left-footed effort from a set-piece.
The Madrid side frustrated Athletic as they held on to the ball and ran down the clock. Ane Azkona went close to putting Las Rojiblancas on the scoresheet at the end of a great counter-attack, but Misa Rodriguez dealt with it.
Sara Ortega also went close with a close-range free-kick in stoppage time. However, Caroline Weir put the game to bed with a strike in the 95th minute.
Although victory was not to be, the atmosphere was spectacular. The Lezama stands, packed to the rafters, were undoubtedly the highlight of the evening.
