The Lionesses narrowly defeated by Real Madrid
Athletic go close to picking up a point but fall just short in Madrid
Athletic Club Women lost 2-1 against Real Madrid at Valdebebas on Sunday evening. The home side took a 2-0 lead, but Jone Amezaga's second half goal saw the Lionesses fight for points until the very end.
Athletic came out dominating. A deflected cross from Oihane put Misa in serious trouble with Rocío Gálvez having to clear the ball off the line.
Real Madrid's goal came against the run of play in in the 27th minute, Esther hitting the back of the net after picking up a rebound from Toletti's shot.
After this Los Blancos began to take the upper hand at the Alfredo Di Stéfano. Quiñones prevented Esther from increasing the lead and Weir struck just wide of the post with a left-footed effort.
In the second half, Quiñones had to be at her best to deny Toletti from a free kick. Yulema Corres had a great chance in the box in the 56th minute, but her shot narrowly missed the target.
Real Madrid continued to push forward and found their reward when Feller beat Quiñones with a low shot. In the next move, however, Amezaga managed to close the gap after her shot took a deflection off a defender.
Athletic were back in the game but aware that any mistake could be costly. Valdezate went close from another rebound, but hit the side netting with a powerful effort.
The Lionesses began to believe. They pushed hard, Pinedo had a go in the 76th minute. Real Madrid, who had a chance of their own via Oroz, were backed into their half.
It wasn't to be. Time ran out on Athletic. The next game is on Saturday at Lezama against UD Granadilla Tenerife (12:00 CET).
