Lionesses through to quarter-finals

Athletic overcome Madrid CFF thanks to a gritty defensive performance and Clara Pinedo's first-half strike

Athletic Club Women qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa de la Reina with a narrow win over Madrid CFF at the Fernando Torres stadium in Fuenlabrada.

Las Rojiblancas had to withstand lot of pressure in the second half, but Pinedo's first-half goal was enough to see off the Madrid side and send the Lionesses through to the final eight with high hopes.

The first warning shot came in the 13th minute, when Madrid CFF struck the woodwork with what was their best chance of the game.

However, shortly afterwards, Clara Pinedo finished off a counter-attack to put the Lionesses ahead. The Bilbao-born striker's fifth goal of the season gave the Zurigorri a confidence boost.

Madrid's speedy striker, Kundananji, was well monitored the Lionesses, while Mariana threatened for Athletic at the other end.

The hosts were much improved in the second half, setting up camp in the Lionesses' half. Kundananji had another chance in the 60th minute, her powerful effort striking the post.

Despite the danger, Iturregi's side managed to defend their lead and secure the win. The Lionesses will now be in the draw for the Copa de la Reina quarter-finals.
