Athletic Women beat Sporting Huelva
The Lionesses capped off a fantastic week by defeating Sporting Huelva
After reaching the Copa semi-finals via a tense penalty shootout, Las Rojiblancas got back to winning ways in Liga F. Goals from Patri Zugasti and Nahikari García saw the Lionesses pick up a 1-2 victory at Sporting Huelva on Sunday.
Athletic could have been forgiven for not being at the races in Huelva, their planned flight from Bilbao to Seville was cancelled the day before the match due to adverse weather meaning the team had to make the journey south by coach instead.
The Zurigorri dominated the first 45, Zugasti firing an early warning shot. The striker, player of the match with a great performance, put the Lionesses ahead with 15 minutes gone. Played through on goal, the shot past Mersnik when one-on-one.
Maria Ruiz had a chance for the Andalusians before Carrasco even the scores in the 43rd minute. Far from shrinking away, the Lionesses hit straight back via Nahikari who headed home a great cross from Nerea Nevado.
There wasn't a lot of action after the break as Athletic took the reigns and restricted their opponents. The most noteworthy moments were Pinedo and Nahikari headers on goal.
Sporting created danger from set pieces and the Lionesses were required to hold out for the final 10 minutes. Fatigue was starting to become a factor in decisive moments.
However, Athletic did not let their heads drop and persevered to secure a 1-2 victory and three well-deserved points.
