Athletic Club - Villarreal CF

Athletic Club Women make it two wins on the bounce after beating Villarreal CF 1-0 at Lezama. The Lionesses are unbeaten at home since January and had to be at their best to see of a strong Villarreal side who battled hard despite being a player down for most of the second 45.

The Zurigorri got off to an early lead thanks to a Nahikari García goal in the sixth minute. The forward scored her fifth goal of the campaign after being set up by Ane Azkona.

Villarreal were reeling and Athletic dominated the early stages. Irene Oguiza almost made it 2-0 with a shot that went narrowly wide, while Adriana Nanclares had little to do at the other end. The away side's most dangerous effort an Ainoa Campos shot that was blocked by Oguiza.

Claudia Iglesias received her marching orders after seeing a second yellow card in the 51st minute. Maddi Torre crashed a header of the crossbar moments later, but the Lionesses struggled to find a second goal.

Athletic looked to kill off the match, while Villarreal, stuck in a relegation battle, threw everything at the Rojiblanca defence in search of an equaliser.

In the end, the Lionesses kept a clean sheet and Nahikari's strike was enough to secure all three points.
