Narrow defeat against Real Madrid

The Lionesses fell to a 1-0 defeat at the Di Stefano, where Las Blancas scored in the second half

A game of two halves. Athletic Club Women had to the upper hand in the first 45, but Real Madrid scored the only goal of the game as they dominated after the break.

The Lionesses remain in sixth place as they head into the final match of the season, which will take place at San Mames.

Athletic played a great first half and dominated for many periods. Maddi Torre fired the first warning shot, forcing Real Madrid's Chavas into action.

At the back, Athletic were well organised and barely gave the hosts a look at goal. Elexpuru and Quiñones were alert in two dangerous moments close to half-time.

Real Madrid were much more threatening after the break and both managers turned to their benches in search of a breakthrough.

Ane Azkona found space down the flanks on several occasions, but couldn't find anyone in the box. Athletic continued to defend resolutely, but a messy action in the box saw Paula Comendador pounce on a rebound off Quiñones to put the hosts ahead in the 70th minute.

David Aznar's side couldn't find an equaliser and left Madrid empty-handed.

Fifth place is still up for grabs as The Cathedral hosts Sevilla next Sunday at 17:00 CEST for the Lionesses' last match of the campaign.
