Athletic Club remained faithful to the statistics and fought back to win against Real, keeping the three points at Lezama in a derby that gradually increased in intensity. Palacios soon gave the lead to the team from Donosti, but the lionesses, in an epic second half, got back into the game thanks to the goals from Azkona and Lucía García. Two consecutive strikes that made the bumper audience shook the stands.

Real Sociedad took the initial lead on six minutes thanks to Palacios, who took advantage of a disputed ball in the red-and-white box. Before that, the match had started with a scare for the visitors when a back-pass could have ended in a goal. The goal conceded hit Athletic like a sledgehammer and they were not able to feel comfortable on the pitch at any point during the first half. The wind made it even more complicated. Valdezate had a couple of chances to equalise the match, but could not find her way to the goal. Eizaguirre gave it a try with a shot that was deviated to hit Ainhoa’s right post. The first half ended with a direct free kick taken by Nahikari that went over the woodwork.

In the second half, Arconada’s side could have increased their tally after a venomous corner that caused some trouble for Ainhoa Tirapu. The match turned into a to-and-fro game. Azkona was about to score but Quiñones cleared her shot. The surprise was yet to come. On 66 minutes Azkona succeeded in sending a great cross from Eunate to the back of the net, after Damaris’s great move along the wing.

Azkona, the player with the most assists of the team, sent a ball to Lucía García that she did not miss, scoring the 2-1. The colour of the match changed as well as its possibilities. Eizaguirre slammed a powerful shot from outside the box against the bar. Lucía García’s response was almost immediate, but Quiñones saved it in the one-on-one. Ainhoa had to make a save with her hands two times to avoid an equaliser in the dying minutes of the derby.

The three points stay at home and give continuity to a run of three consecutive league wins ahead of next Saturday’s match league in Seville against Real Betis, prior to the Copa de la Reina quarter-finals.
