Athletic Club - Sevilla FC

A goal was enough for Sevilla FC to knock the Lionesses of the Copa de la Reina. Although Athletic dominated the second half, they struggled in front of goal and could not mount a comeback after Débora’s strike for the visitors. Iraia Iturregi’s side had chances to equalise, but Sevilla FC defended their lead well and booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Débora out Sevilla ahead with a shot from outside the box in the fourth minute. As the Lionesses tried to recover, Sevilla almost doubled their lead when Vasconcelos missed the target after a dangerous counter-attack.

Oguiza tried her luck from the edge of the area and in the 42nd minute Oihane had Athletic’s best chance.

Iraia made three changes during the break and the home side stepped up a gear when they came back out. Inma Gabarro was denied by Mariasun Quiñones, who turned the ball behind for a corner. Erika Vázquez could have equalised in the 73rd minute, but her half-volley went over.

Lucía García had a go from a free-kick but Sevilla’s Itzel was able to stop it. The Lionesses continued to press but could not find a goal.

Erika Vázquez went close again in the dying moments of the match. Sevilla effectively killed off the match when Itzel saved her team from extra time with a brilliant save.

Now it’s time to move on and get ready for Saturday’s league match against Real Madrid.
