Athletic Club - FC Barcelona

Despite Athletic Club Women's best efforts there were to be no upsets as they fell to a 0-3 defeat against FC Barcelona on Saturday evening.

FC Barcelona controlled possession and were dangerous in attack, but Iraia Iturregi's side were faultless in the first half, holding their own against the Catalans - partly thanks to a couple of fantastic saves by Mariasun Quiñones - while also threatening on the counter-attack.

At the other end, Barça keeper Gemma Font had no trouble keeping out long-range efforts from Arana and Mariana.

There were no goals after the first 45 minutes, Athletic defended resolutely and it was clear FC Barcelona would need to be more clinical or to take advantage of a mistake.

The visitors broke the deadlock shortly after the restart, Claudia Pina making it 1-0 in the 49th minute. Geyse Ferreira made it 2-0 in the 57th minute.

The match almost slowed down significantly as it approached the hour mark, the two teams cancelling each other out. That was until the 84th minute, when Mariona Caldentey scored Barça's third and final goal of the evening.

The Lionesses will now need to pick themselves up and keep going. Next Saturday they take on Deportivo Alavés in Vitora for their first Basque Derby of season
