Athletic take all three points in Valencia

A second win in a row for Iraia Iturregi's Lionesses, whose hard-working performance saw them overcome a talented home side

Athletic Club Women make it back-to-back wins in the same week. The Lionesses beat Valencia CF 1-2 at the Antonio Puchades in a vibrant match where hard work saw Iraia Iturregi's side pick up another win.

Despite a late strike from Torrodà, goals from Pinedo and Arana saw the Lionesses bring all three points to Bilbao.

Las Rojiblancas got off to bright start, Clara and Ortega threatening Valencia with a couple of efforts.

There was a flurry of chances on the half-hour mark. Mariana connected with a good cross from Peke, but the home keeper Enith kept it out.

The Valencians looked for a response. Fiamma hit the crossbar from the edge of the area and shortly afterwards she did so again from a free kick. At the break Valencia had a slight edge, but the game was wide open.

The first big chance of the second half came in the 57th mintue when Enith denied Arana in a one-on-one situation.

Five minutes later Pinedo gave Athletic the lead with her first goal of the season. The forward teamed up with Ane Azkona before expertly slotting the ball into the back of the net. Valencia CF reacted and Maria Quiñones stopped the hosts from equalising in the 71st minute.

With ten minutes to go, Valencia threw the kitchen sink at Athletic in search of a comeback. Los Ches got lots of players into the box and every cross became a danger.

The match played out into a crescendo, with two stoppage time goals. First, Arana put the game to bed when she sent the ball straight into the top corner. Almost immediately after, Torrodà scored Valencia's only goal of the encounter.

In the end, a hard-earned win for Athletic Club, who in five days have wracked up six points to climb up the table. Now the Lionesses will start preparing for the big derby against Real Sociedad at San Mamés.
