An emotional end to a great season

The Lionesses finish in fifth place after beating Sevilla FC as San Mames celebrated the careers of three champions in Eunate, Yulema and Garazi

It was the finishing touch to a great season. Athletic Club defeated Sevilla FC 2-1 at San Mamés to secure fifth place in Liga F.

The Lionesses have grown enormously in the second half of the campaign, winning all their home games since the halfway mark, a record only bettered by champions FC Barcelona.

The closing act at The Cathedral was full of emotion. Before kick-off, Athleticzales paid tribute to three of the last champions, Eunate, Yulema and Garazi, who leave Athletic in good hands, with a strong project in the making.

A standing ovation and aurresku with Jose Angel Iribar and president Jon Uriarte as witnesses before the match got underway was followed by a triple substitution in the 60th minute with the 13,381 spectators on their feet and Athletic ahead 2-0.

Garazi showed composure, Yulema technical gestures and Eunate brought out her brilliant left foot for the last time to provide a golden assist for Azkona to score our second.

The only bad news was an injury to Oguiza early on. A lively Azkona could've put Athletic ahead with a header in the opening stages. However, Jone Amezaga outpaced the Sevilla defence and finished low to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute.

The game opened up much more in the second half. Athletic thought they'd sealed the game in the 52nd minute with Azkona's goal but Sevilla pushed back. Quiñones produced two great saves to keep the Lionesses two ahead, but Inma Gabarro bounced on a rebound to pull one back for the visitors.

Azkona had a chance to make it 3-1, but Athletic held out for the win nonetheless. The fans were delighted as David Aznara's side's brought the season to end with a great display at The Cathedral.

An unforgettable year for the club with both first teams having great campaigns. Now it's time to rest and recover for a huge 2024/25.
