Athletic's run ends against Madrid CFF
The Lionesses fell to a 2-1 defeat against a side who had the better chances on the day
Athletic Club Women's winning streak comes to a halt after seven matches. The Lionesses were narrowly defeated by Madrid CFF at the Fernando Torres Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Despite a valient performance by Adriana Nanclares between the sticks, the hosts had a multitude of chances and picked up a deserved win. Even though Sara Ortega had evened the scores in the second half, Luany found a winner in the dying minutes.
Lucía Pardo struck the post twice to startle the Zurigorri early on. Madrid CFF began very strongly and subdued David Aznar's side.
The Lionesses struggled to create any danger and in the 38th minutes a shot took a deflection off Maite Zubieta before going in to put the home side 1-0 up.
Athletic went all out for an equaliser in the second half. Ane Azkona fired a first warning, but the Lionesses couldn't find a way past Paolo Ulloa.
Las Leonas had taken it up a gear and levelled in the 66th minute. Ane Elexpuru, Clara Pinedo and Sara Ortega connected before the latter struck with an effort across goal.
In the final stretch, Madrid were getting into our box often and Athletic's defence struggled to deal with their long balls.Two superb Nanclares saves, plus a block by Maddi Torre, stopped the hosts from scoring, but Luany scored the winning goal with a header in the 89th minute.
