Athletic Under-21s thrash Middlesbrough at Riverside Stadium
The Under-21 squad, mostly formed of Bilbao Athletic players, beat the English side 0-4 in the Premier League International Cup

Athletic Club picked up their first win of the 2024/25 Premier League International Cup with a 0-4 victory over Middlesbrough FC at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Zurigorri, led by Bilbao Athletic head coach Jokin Aranbarri, who travelled with a big part of his own squad to England, were far superior to Middlesbrough, with Ekain Azkune, Enaut Lete, Ander Izagirre and Ander Hierro getting the goals.
Around the half-hour mark, Athletic scored three times in quick succession to effectively put the game to bed. Hierro made sure there was no way back for Boro with a strike two minutes after the restart.
This win sees the Under-21s move into second in the standings on five points, a position that would see them qualify automatically for the quarter-finals.
In addition, they have yet to finish the match against Blackburn Rovers that was abandoned with the scores at 0-0 due to fog last November, which will be resumed on 5 February at The Wham Stadium in Accrington.
