Our last Pichichi turns 72

Former Athletic Club striker Carlos Ruiz became the league’s top scorer in 1975

Born in Bilbao on June 7, 1948, former Athletic Club player Carlos Ruiz Herrero turns 72 today. He came to our club from CD Getxo and he debuted in an official match with our First Team on September 12, 1970, in a game played against FC Barcelona (1-1) at San Mamés, after replacing Beitia in the 77th minute.

After 11 seasons and 275 games, he scored 115 goals, 19 of which he achieved in the 1974/75 League, which helped him get the Pichichi Trophy of that edition and become the last footballer of our club to do so. Before him, Zarra (six times), Gorostiza (two), ‘Bata’, Unamuno and Fidel Uriarte also received this award.

In addition, he raised the Cup in 1973, when Athletic beat CD Castellón by 2 goals to 0 at Vicente Calderón.
