Gaizka Garitano feels confident ahead of their fixture with Leganés, a match against a ‘dangerous opponent’ where their chance to get into the European competition is at stake
Athletic Club’s manager Gaizka Garitano talked to the media in the press conference given ahead of the fixture between Athletic Club and Leganés at San Mamés (Thursday, 9:00pm). The clash corresponding to Matchweek 37 in LaLiga will be a vital contest in order to maintain the hosts’ European aspirations.
The manager from Derio highlighted the importance of not paying too much attention to what their direct opponents for a Europa League position -Getafe and Real Sociedad- do: “We shouldn’t look at what anybody does. We must assume the other sides will win to force ourselves to give our best. We don’t need any calculations, the only thing to do is win”.
As for their opponents, who can still be saved from relegation, he said that: “Leganés are well organised at the back and we’ll have to find the spaces. We’re supposed to dominate the game, but they are really dangerous. We must be very alert. It will be a difficult match because there’s a lot at stake for them. Both of us want to win, each one for a different reason. They have added 7 points in the last three league matches, while they haven’t conceded any goals”.
Garitano believes the team are strong despite the potential injuries: “Injuries can happen when a game is played every third day, but we are one of the sides with the fewest injured players. As for physical statistics, we’re taking our rivals by storm. We’re playing for something wonderful, which is really cool and we’re really glad with what the lads are doing”.
