The Bayonne-born central-midfielder arrives from Girondins de Bordeaux, where she was captain
Girondins de Bordeaux central midfielder Sophie Illistart (23-04-1996) has signed for Athletic Club Women, she will play in the first team and has put pen to paper on a two-year deal which expires on June 30, 2022.
Bayonne-native Istillart played more than 70 games for Bordeaux. She was instrumental last season as the French club achieved a club-record third in the French league and reached the semi-finals of the domestic cup. The French Basque was club captain at Bordeaux and departed yesterday after being given a warm send off during a friendly match.
She started playing football in Hendaye, moved to Mariño de Irún and then played for Blanquefort before signing for Girondins in 2015. Sophie is right footed and plays in the middle of the park. She has played for both the Basque and French national sides at youth level.
On Monday morning, the new Athletic Club player -who becomes the first French-Basque female player in the Athletic Club’s history- passed a medical in IMQ and signed an agreement in Ibaigane, meaning she will be ready to join up with Ángel Villacampa’s squad on Wednesday.
