Garitano: “It’s vital we start off well in LaLiga”

The head coach Gaizka Garitano predicts a tough test in tomorrow’s LaLiga opener against Granada

Head coach Gaizka has reiterated the importance of Athletic Club getting off to a good start in LaLiga.

The lions face Granada FC away on Saturday evening at 18:30 (CET) in the opening fixture of the season, and the boss Gaizka is hopeful Athletic can pick up three points.

It’s vital we start off well,” Garitano said at the pre-match press conference in Lezama. “And inspire hope from the beginning.

We’re going into an exciting season, with the Copa final and the Super Cup ahead of us, and, of course a new LaLiga season.

We hope to return from Granada with positive vibes.”

Athletic Club start off the 2020-21 season against their last opponents from the 2019-20 LaLiga Santander campaign, and Garitano stressed that Granada should be taken seriously.

“We know Granada very well having played them four times last season,” Garitano said. “They’re a tough team and have kept together the same group that got them qualified for Europe.

“They can mix it up tactically and they’ve got a powerful midfield and forward line.

“Without a doubt, they’ll be a difficult rival.”

With regards to the condition of the squad ahead of the match, the head coach pointed out the difference in minutes played over pre-season among first-team players.

He added: “We have players in different places. Some are ready for a full match and others for 20 minutes.

“I have a clear idea in my mind for tomorrow. We’ll put out the strongest side possible to try and win three points.”
