Muniain: “It’s a tough blow, but we must keep our chins up”

The Athletic captain regrets not having “taken advantage of the numerical superiority ” but does not want to be too “pessimisitic” as the season has just begun

Athletic Club captain Iker Muniain says that the players must move on quickly from the defeat against Cádiz and pick themselves up for Sunday’s derby against Alavés.

The lions fell to a painful 0-1 against Cádiz on their LaLiga Santander return to San Mamés.

“We’re annoyed because it came off the back of a good game in Ipurua,” Muniain said after the match. “We wanted to keep confidence high and it’s a shame to lose this opportunity.

“It’s a tough blow, but we can’t be pessimistic because it’s still early days.”

The no.10 admitted Athletic found it difficult to break down Cádiz’s resolute defence: “We were on top in the first half, we tried to get balls out wide for crosses and we looked inside too, but they sat back and it was difficult.

“There were few clear chances and the game was decided in an unfortunate moment. It’s a shame that we haven’t got points in a game where we had a numerical advantage.

“Normally, there’s always more space, but today we couldn’t take advantage of that. But we have to keep our chins up because on Sunday we’ve got to fight with everything we have in the derby against Alavés.”
