Gaizka Garitano: “We haven’t started well, but we’ve only played four games”

Gaizka Garitano sent out an optimistic message after Athletic’s defeat: “I’m convinced we’re capable of turning things around.”

Athletic Club coach Gaizka Garitano said he is “concerned and responsible” after the lions were beaten 1-0 by Deportivo Alavés at Mendizorroza.

The rojiblancos now have a two-week break before they face Levante at San Mamés in their LaLiga Matchday 6 fixture.

“This is the moment to have faith, stick together and keep working,” Garitano declared in his post-match press conference. “We haven’t started well, but we’ve only played four matches.

“The year is long and I’m convinced we’re capable of turning things around.”

The Athletic Club manager rued his side’s errors in front of goal, adding: “In the first half, there were times where we reached the final third looking dangerous, but we couldn’t get that final pass right.

“We missed simple passes and we made mistakes that ultimately cost us the game. All that remains is to keep working, sort out the mistakes and work on our strengths.”

Despite the defeat, Garitano emphasised the defensive work done by Athletic Club throughout the match.

“We knew Alavés were especially dangerous from set-pieces,” the boss added. “We didn’t concede a single corner in the entire game and they had very few chances.

“However, we gave away an unnecessary foul and it cost us the match.”
