Summer signing from Girondins de Bordeaux, Sophie Istillart made her Athletic Club debut on Wednesday night in the Copa de la Reina semi-final defeat against EDF Logroño. Sophie became the first ever player from the French Basque Country to represent Athletic Club Women when she came on as a 65th minute substitute for winger Jone Ibañez. The Bayonne native had previously played in a friendly against Deportivo Alavés and in the Euskal Herria Cup against SD Eibar and Real Sociedad.

Sophie joins Paula Arana as the current squad’s debutants. Arana, 18 years old, made her debut in the 2020-21 Primera Iberdrola opener. The young forward became the first Lezama academy player to start for the lionesses so far this season. Arana, a member of the reserve squad managed by Iraia Iturregi, took part in pre-season training with the first team along with fellow academy footballers: Mariana, Nevado, Estefa, Bibiane, Monente and Elexpuru.
