Morcillo: “We’re taking it game by game”

Jon Morcillo emphasised that Athletic are fully focused on “winning at the José Zorrilla” this Sunday

Athletic Club winger Jon Morcillo has said the lions are not setting any long-term goals yet and are only concentrating on winning their next match.

The lions face 20th-placed Real Valladolid at the Estadio José Zorilla this Sunday (18:30 CET), and Athletic are looking to build upon last weekend’s good result against Sevilla FC.

“We want to keep working and winning,” Morcillo told the media. “The side is looking to win the next match. We’re not going to set targets for the future, we’re taking it game by game because that’s how you win points.

We have to go to Valladolid and get a win. That’s our only aim… to win the next fixture.”

The left winger was promoted to the first team in the summer and has been involved in all seven of Athletic’s LaLiga Santander matches so far in 2020-21.

“It’s a dream come true, it’s beautiful,” Morcillo said. “You come up from Bilbao Athletic and you find yourself with players that have always been your idols.

“To share a dressing room with them and to see them at your side is incredible.

“I’ve only just arrived, but my ambition is to have a long career here. With hard work, effort and sacrifice, I’m sure things will continue as they have done until now.”

Morcillo is one of a number of young players brought into to the first team this season and the youngster admitted the treatment they received from the senior members of the squad made the process much easier.

“When you get here and your teammates take you in like one of their family, it takes a weight off your shoulders,” he said.

“It’s an honour to see players coming up and making the grade, whilst knowing, of course, that we have a lot left to improve.”
