Athletic Club manager Gaizka Garitano bemoaned Real Sociedad’s early goal and Athletic Club’s inability to test the opposition’s defence
Winger Portu scored in the first and only goal of the match in the 4th minute, condemning the lions to a 0-1 defeat in the Basque derby at San Mamés.
“The first goal conditioned the match,” Garitano said during his post-match press conference. “They demonstrated a clear defensive superiority because they defended well and we struggled to create clear chances on goal.
“We didn’t have a shot on target because we lacked clarity in the final third.”
With the fixtures coming thick and fast in January, Athletic will be forced to turn the page as soon as possible, starting with Elche’s visit to Bilbao on Sunday 3rd.
“We have to think about the match we have in three days time,” Garitano added. “We have to recover and prepare for the match with the intention of winning it.”
