Athletic Club manager Marcelino García Toral believes his side deserved more from their hard-fought 1-1 draw against Villarreal CF on Sunday night.

The Lions went behind early on at San Mamés after Gerard Moreno scored for Villarreal. But winger, and current top scorer, Alex Berenguer popped up just before the half-time whistle to ensure Athletic took home a point.

“We were extremely dominant and had clear chances to win,” Marcelino said during his post-match press conference.

“The team wasn’t great in the first half, but we bounced back and showed that we wanted to win.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t get the second, it would have been just. We deserved to win.”

Marcelino was especially pleased with how the Lions stood up to a dangerous LaLiga Santander opponent, highlighting the attitude and fight his side demonstrated: “We showed we can compete against any other team.

“Villarreal are a great team and we were superior. A lack of accuracy punished us.”
