Marcelino: “One of the most satisfying games I’ve seen”

Marcelino Garcia hailed a superb performance by a much-changed Athletic starting XI

Marcelino García Toral lauded the Lions for the never-say-die attitude they showed against Granada CF on Sunday night at San Mamés.

Athletic went ahead early on via striker Asier Villalibre, but it looked as though Granada would escape Bilbao with a point after Jorge Molina equalised in the 78th minute.

That was until substitute Alex Berenguer sealed the win for the Lions with a fantastic left-footed effort in stoppage-time.

“To make nine changes and get this level of performance is extremely pleasing,” Marcelino said after the match.

“The team was solid and it’s one of the most satisfying games I’ve seen.

“These players are being rewarded for all their efforts and everything they do day after day.”

Match-winner Alex Berenguer is in a fine vein of form, having scored five goals in his last five appearances. He netted the winner against Levante on Thursday, and Athletic once again have to the winger to thank for another victory.

“The footballer is going through a streak where he’s seeing the goal like a rainbow,” Marcelino said about the winger.

“He has that confidence and determination to put away his chances. It’s good for him and even better for the team.

“We’re very happy with his performance and the effectiveness he’s showing.”

After a massive week, the Rojiblancos will travel to Madrid on Wednesday, where they take on the LaLiga Santander leaders Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“We’ll go to win,” Marcelino said. “It’s an appealing match for us and we’re going to try and be at out best to pick up three points.

“If we’re able to do that, we’ll be in the fight for European places.”
