The road to the first final (II): Sestao River Club
The first Biscay derby in a generation produced a memorable atmosphere in Sestao and at Las Llanas
The second round of the 2019-20 Cup would bring a very special clash for Athletic Club and for Biscay. The draw saw the Lions face local side Sestao River Club. It was a match that will be remembered for the party-like atmosphere in Sestao that day.
Including the final against Real Sociedad in April, it was one of two Basque derbies the Lions will have played in this edition of the Copa.
The fans of Sestao River Club, one of the well-supported sides in the region, approached the match against the Lions as if it were a massive celebration. Although Athletic were stronger on the pitch, the Las Llanas was witness to a clash and an atmosphere which nobody in attendance will forget.
Athletic won the match 0-4, with Yuri Berchiche and Asier Villalibre grabbing a brace each. The opener was also the Buffalo’s first goal in an official match for Athletic.
It was an important victory on what was a great night for football in Biscay. Athletic went through to the Round of 32, where they took another trip to the Martínez Valero after being drawn with Elche CF.
