The road to the second final (IV): Levante UD

A draw in the first leg, with goals from Iñigo Martínez and Melero, meant the tie would be decided at the Ciutat de València

Time for the semi-finals. The last step before the final, and played across two legs, first at San Mamés and then at the Ciutat de València. The match in The Cathedral was a little odd. In other circumstances, if there were no pandemic, the atmosphere in the stadium would have been incredible. The stakes were high. The Lions sought passage to a second consecutive Copa del Rey final, while Levante had their eyes on a first Copa final appearance in their history.

The visiting side got off to a better start. Paco López’s charges drew first blood when Gonzalo Melero took advantage of a defensive mistake before finishing past Unai Simón.

Athletic came out reinvigorated after the break, creating several dangerous chances. Centre-back Iñigo Martínez put the Rojiblancos back on level scores with a bullet of header from a corner. The Lions kept pushing for a winner but found an Aitor Fernández in good form between the sticks. The clash ended 1-1 and a place in the final would be settled a month later at the Ciutat de València.
