Marcelino: “I’m proud of the way we played”

Marcelino praised the attitude shown by the Lions in their draw with Real Valladolid

Despite giving away a late equaliser, Athletic Club manager Marcelino García Toral was proud of his side’s performances in their 2-2 draw with Real Valladolid at San Mamés.

Athletic twice went ahead in what was an intense encounter at The Cathedral. But they were not able to hold on to the lead, with Shon Weissman levelling the scores in the 85th minute.

“I can’t complain about the players. We competed well, we pressed and created chances,” Marcelino said during his post-match press conference. “I’m proud of the way we played. I think the players deserved to win, but the small details made it a draw.”

The coach was clear when asked about Athletic’s goals for the rest of the season. “We have to be solid in every game we have left and finish the competition with as many points as possible. Pre-season starts in July, now is the time to compete.”

It was a good night for Lezama as Nico Williams made his debut and Jon Morcillo scored his first LaLiga goal.

“Nico is a young lad and we believe in him,” Marcelino added about the winger’s first appearance. “With his talent, ambition, work and effort, it’s just a matter of time before he’s part of the Athletic Club first team and he gets more and more minutes.”
