Herrerín to leave Athletic Club at the end of the season
He has played 119 games for the first team, including the first match at the new San Mamés and 2014-15 Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona
Athletic Club goalkeeper Iago Herrerín will leave the Club at the end of the season after eight seasons with the first team.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper, whose contract expires on June 30, has made 119 first-team appearances, 37 of which were in the Europa League and 26 in the Copa del Rey.
In fact, he was the starting keeper during Athletic’s run to the Copa final under Ernesto Valverde in 2014-15 and was part of the squads that won the last two Super Cups.
Coming up through the ranks at Lezama, Herrerín grew from his experience in Segunda B, where he spent six seasons with Barakaldo, Bilbao Athletic and Atlético B. After going to Atletico Madrid in 2011-12, he signed for Numancia in 2012-13. However, Iago returned to Athletic the following season, going straight into the first-team squad.
Among other highlights, Iago will always be remembered as Athletic’s starting goalkeeper for the first ever official fixture at the new San Mamés, an unforgettable match against Celta.
Athletic Club will pay tribute to shotstopper and present him with a gift before the LaLiga clash with Real Madrid, the final home game of the season.
