Marcelino: “We were outplayed by Huesca”

Marcelino gave credit to Athletic’s opponents after the defeat at El Alcoraz: “Huesca deserved to win.”

Athletic Club manager Marcelino admitted that his side did not deserve to win during their 1-0 defeat to SD Huesca on Wednesday night.

The home side’s are in the midst of a battle to stay in LaLiga Santander and played out of their skins. Nonetheless, it took them until the 60th minute to break the deadlock against the Lions.

“Things didn’t come off for us tonight,” Marcelino said after the match. “Our attitude was good, but the opponents outplayed us, they beat us in almost every single duel and dominated the match. Huesca deserved to win the match.”

The Rojiblancos struggled to overcome Huesca’s pressure in the first half and barely troubled Álvaro Fernández in the home team’s goal.

“We could hardly create any danger and we struggled to adjust to their press,” Marcelino added. “The second half was more end to end, but we didn’t really trouble them either. You have to give Huesca credit for that.”

Marcelino acknowledged Athletic have struggled to maintain consistency in the final stretch of the season, citing injuries and the busy schedule, but insisted his side must give their all in the remaining two fixtures.

“The team is thin on the ground and lacking the freshness needed to face these last games,” he said.

“But we have two more games left and we must do all we can to be competitive in both of them.”
