The full-back stressed his opinion that “one of our strengths is that any player can do well”.
Left-back Mikel Balenziaga praised Athletic Club first-team’s work-ethic and attitude, saying they are “driven and motivated”.
Athletic have got off to good start in LaLiga 2021-22. They are still undefeated with two draws and a win from their first three matches, and have kept two clean sheets, the only goal conceded coming against FC Barcelona.
The Lions’ next fixture comes after the current international break and will see them take on RCD Mallorca at San Mamés on Saturday September 11 at 21:00 CEST.
“In pre-season we felt good and we’ve started well,” Balenziaga told the media at a press conference in Lezama on Thursday morning. “We’re on the right path and the whole team is getting better little by little.
“We’ve played away from home twice now [against Elche CF and RC Celta], without conceding. We are doing well in defence and attack, but there’s still room for improvement in both aspects.”
One of the most experienced players in the squad and a first-team leader, Balenziaga spoke about the positive spirit in the changing room.
He said: “We’ve got healthy competition for places. One of our strengths is that any player in the squad can come in and play well. It’s good for the team that everyone is at their best.”
As for the young players who have risen through the ranks to join the senior side, the defender stressed the need for time and patience.
“There are a lot of talented young players. That’s what gives us life,” he added. “But we have to be patient with them. We all want results, but we have to go slowly, albeit whilst being demanding on a daily basis.”
