Quiñones, Itxaso and Peke make their Athletic Club debuts

The three new recruits played their first official match in the victory against Madrid CFF

In addition to Athletic Club Women’s victory in Madrid, we got to see the Lionesses’ summer signings, Mariasun Quiñones, Itxaso Uriarte and Ainize “Peke” Barea, in action, with all three making their official club debuts.

Goalkeeper Quiñones was the only one to start the game and she put in an assured performance, barely putting a foot wrong and keeping a clean sheet despite the fact Madrid CFF’s forwards had the bit between their teeth.

The home side hit the woodwork twice in the first half. Nonetheless, the new goalkeeper played the whole game and was able to enjoy a victory in her first appearance as a Lioness. She wore the blue jersey and had the no.24 on her back.

Itxaso came on in the second half, replacing Irene Oguiza in the 60th minute. The player from Alava shored up the midfield for the last half hour of the game. She showed signs of her character and grit in a couple of defensive actions and gave the Athletic midfield some composure.

Shortly afterwards, Ane Azkona made it 0-2. Itxaso, who was only able to play the first friendly match of the pre-season due to knee problems, got her first official minutes of the season while wearing the no.18 shirt.

Peke was the last of the debutants to come on in Madrid. The striker with the no.22 on her back replaced Paula Arana. The summer signing had 10 minutes to fight for loose balls and was able to help the Lionesses maintain their 0-2 lead until the end of the clash.

A promising start for all three as they got their first taste of victory in the red and white jersey.
