Marcelino: “It’s a shame we missed out on all three points”

Marcelino bemoans a missed opportunity after Valencia’s late goal, but is still “satisfied” with his players’ display

Athletic Club head coach Marcelino García Toral admitted he was disappointed the Lions were unable to hold on and take all three points after their 1-1 draw with Valencia at Mestalla on Saturday.

Centre-back Iñigo Martinez gave the Lions the lead with a thumping header in the 69th minute, and despite the fact Valencia went down to 10 men in the final stretch, Marcos Andre grabbed an equaliser in the dying minutes of stoppage time.

“It’s a shame,” Marcelino said at his post-match press conference. “We’ve missed out on all three points in a match we deserved to win.

“In a week with three games, we have taken far fewer points than we should have done. We have to keep working so that these sort of things stop hurting us.”

Despite the fact Athletic only picked up one point, the head coach was satisfied with how Athletic performed in general, saying: “The end doesn’t tarnish how satisfied I am with the performance and with how the players worked. We were strong and very solid, especially in defence. We have to be patient and keep trusting in our players.”
