Athletic lead the way in clean sheets

The Lions have not shipped a goal in five of their eight matches so far

Athletic Club’s defence has been practically impenetrable so far this season. Marcelino’s Lions have kept five clean sheets in their first eight LaLiga fixtures of the season: against Elche, Celta Vigo, Atlético Madrid and Deportivo Alavés. The last time this happened was in 1969, when José Ángel Iribar was in goal.

Only three teams have found a way past Athletic’s back four, with FC Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano -twice- and Valencia responsible for the four goals in the Lions’ ‘against’ column. As we head into the second international break of the season, Athletic are among the teams who have conceded fewest goals in Europe’s top leagues.

Thanks to these defensive figures, the Rojiblancos have managed to take 13 points with three wins, four draws and one defeat. Furthermore, on the rest of the continent, no other club has registered more clean sheets after playing the same amount of fixtures.

In LaLiga, Real Sociedad and Villarreal -the latter have a game in hand- have also recorded five clean sheets, while Sevilla, who have played a match less, have four.

In the Premier League, all participants have played seven matches and the best defensive side are Manchester City, with five clean sheets, while Chelsea and Liverpool have four. After the first seven matches of Serie A and the Bundesliga, Napoli and Mainz 05 stand out with four clean sheets each.

Finally, in Ligue 1, Nice have five clean sheets in eight games and Angers have four from nine.
