Marcelino: “I’m very happy with the performance”

Marcelino bemoans not getting the three points despite “a great game where we played with confidence” and troubled the opponents

Athletic Club manager Marcelino García Toral said he was pleased with the Lions performance during their 1-1 draw with RCD Espanyol on Tuesday night.

Athletic fought back from a goal down to pick up a point, and would have won all three, if it were not for an impressive showing by Espanyol’s goalkeeper, Diego López.

“I’m very happy with the team’s performance,” Marcelino said during his post-match press conference. “It’s not easy to play like that against this opponent at their ground.

“We played with a lot of ambition, looking for a goal, creating many clear chances, but we came up against an exceptional performance by their goalkeeper.”

Marcelino stressed that Athletic were “strong and played well” throughout the match, but just lacked a bit of luck at both ends.

“It was bad luck, an unfortunate moment and we concede and penalty and they score,” he said. “But if we keep creating chances like we did today, goals will come. Tonight it wasn’t enough. It’s a pity we didn’t get the reward we deserved. We can be sad about that, but satisfied with the attitude and what we showed on the pitch.”

Marcelino reiterated his confidence in the team, saying he is certain the team will win more than they lose if they can maintain their current form. He said: “If we keep playing like this, we’ll get the three points in most of our matches, I’m sure of it.”
