Athletic Club on World Children’s Day

Dani Vivian and Naroa Uriarte stress the importance of children enjoying sport in a safe and positive environment

Every year on November 20, World Children’s Day is celebrated. The special date is designed to recognise and promote all children’s right to live safe and healthy lives.

It is a day to highlight progress made, but above all it is about drawing attention to the situation of the most disadvantaged children. Furthermore, it seeks to raise awareness surrounding the need to work every day to ensure their wellbeing and personal growth, as well as keeping them safe from harm or violence.

This also applies to sport. Something which is central focus at Athletic Club, exemplified by the ATERPE programme, an policy set up by the Club in April 2019 to protect children in its care.

Through first-team players Dani Vivian and Naroa Uriarte, Athletic Club has joined the cause by reiterating youngster’s rights to practice sport in a friendly and welcoming environment.

“I’ve always been surrounded by football. My parents, my brother, my uncles and aunts, we all share the same passion for the sport but we understand the importance of respect,” said Vivian.

“As you grow up, the way you live football changes with you, you begin to understand it in a new way. Living the moment and being aware of where you are comes first.”

Naroa spoke about the need to enjoy the sport and play without pressure: “No one would pressure me, they [my parents and family] just told me to have fun and not worry about success. It’s a matter of doing what you’re good at and enjoying yourself on the pitch.”
