Athletic Club will face Club Necaxa at the Mexican side's Estadio Victoria in the city of Aguascalientes. Set to take place on July 19 2023, it is the Lions' second friendly in the country, as they will also go head to head with Chivas on July 16 in the final leg of the Tree of Gernika Trophy.

The friendly is part of Club Necaxa's centenary celebrations. Coincidentally, 'Los Rayos' as the Aguascalientes-based side are also known, also play in red and white.

It will be the second ever clash between Club Necaxa and Athletic Club, with the two sides having already met as champions of their respective leagues on August 28 1935. The fixture took place in Mexico City as part of Los Leones' Mexican tour, Patricio Caicedo's Athletic losing 4-1.

After years of promotions and relegations from the elite of Mexican football, Club Necaxa has been competing in the Liga BBVA MX (First Division) since 2016. Their trophy cabinet includes three league titles, one CONCACAF Champions League, four Copas MX and one Mexican Super Cup.
