Athletic Club midfielder Oihan Sancet has signed an eight-year contract extension keeping him at Athletic Club until 2032.
The 22-year-old has quickly become one of Athletic's standout players, while his potential to keep improving is an exciting prospect for all Athleticzales. He is the side's top goalscorer at the moment, with eight goals from his attacking-midfield position.
The player signed his deal at San Mamés with president Jon Uriarte and director of football Mikel González. It was Sancet himself who announced his long-awaited renewal to the fans at The Cathedral at the end of the match against Getafe CF.
"I'm happy. This is my home, where I want to be. Athletic is a big draw for players from the Basque Country and I want to be here. There is no better club to progress as a footballer and as a person," Sancet said about his contract.
"The Club made a strong commitment to me when I was a youth player, and it is doing so again now with a very ambitious project. I want to repay all the trust placed in me."
With Saturday's game against Getafe, the Under-21 international has now made 107 appearances as a Lion, scoring 17 goals. His journey at Lezama began eight years ago, when he joined Athletic Club as a 14-year-old.
He progressed through the different age groups until Gaizka Garitano gave him his official debut on 16 August 2019 in the victory over FC Barcelona, the same match in which Aritz Aduriz scored that unforgettable bicycle-kick goal.
Meanwhile Jon Uriarte praised the fact Athletic have been able to tie down one of our most exciting young players for the best years of his career, describing Oihan as "an example for the talent in our academy and on pitches throughout the Basque Country".
He continued: "This is great news for Athletic. We must always have the best players possible, within our own parameters and possibilities. Oihan is a standout player. All our footballers are very important, but since rising to the first team, Oihan has shown he has something different. What's more he has no limit."
