Homage to first Athletic Club Women champions

Homage to first Athletic Club Women champions

During the LaLiga fixture against Sevilla FC, San Mames will pay tribute to our the squad that won our first women's championship 20 years ago

San Mames will pay tribute to the players and coaching staff of the Athletic Club Women squad that won the 2002/03 league title, the first of the side's five championship trophies.

The celebration will take place on April 27, during half-time of Los Leones' LaLiga Santander clash with Sevilla FC. The act falls on the same date as the the Lionesses' title-winning fixture against Híspalis at San Mames 20 years ago, a match which took place in front of 35,000 spectators.

It was a triumph which paved the way for Athletic's newly created women's team to achieve many great feats, and as such, it deserves to be remembered and celebrated. The Lionesses went on to retain the title over the following two seasons, and topped the league again in 2006/07 and 2015/16.

For this reason, Athletic Club wishes to recognise the work of these pioneers who, along with many other women footballers in Biscay and The Basque Country, overcame barriers and prejudices to promote a message of great significance.

This San Mames tribute follows a similar one which ocurred on 2 October 2022, as the 20th anniversary of the team's foundation was commemorated during a league match against Real Madrid Women at Lezama.

Athletic would like to thank the footballers and coaching staff from the 2002/03 squad for their willingness to take part in this homage at The Cathedral.
