Guruzeta: "Beating Girona would be huge for us"

The foward spoke to local media ahead of Monday's clash against Girona FC at Montilivi (21:00 CET)

Athletic Club striker Gorka Guruzeta, the side's current top scorer with six LaLiga goals, is confident Los Leones have what it takes to beat Girona FC, league leaders and the competition's dark horses.

The Catalan outfit sit top of LaLiga EA Sports having won 11 of their 13 fixtures so far, while losing one and drawing the other.

"We know it's going to be tough," Guruzeta said at a press conference on Wednesday morning. "Girona have only lost one match, against Real Madrid. But we're going there optimistic we can win. Beating them would be huge for us."

The Zurigorri are back in LaLiga action after a long international break and Gorka is hopeful Athletic can continue their unbeaten run and keep pushing for a European spot.

He said: "Footballers always want to play, but it's also good to disconnect occasionally, to train hard for a week and get in good shape.

"Our objective is to get into Europe. The squad is desperate to do that. We also have to be positive in the Copa del Rey and try to be in the running for the trophy."

With six strikes in 13 LaLiga appearances so far this campaign, our no.12 has already equally his return from last season and he hopes to keep finding the back of the net.

"It's been a good start. I'm scoring goals and helping the team in many aspects of our game," he added. "Last season was my first at this level and that's always a lot more difficult.

"I don't think a lot has changed. I played well last year too. But when the ball doesn't go in, that's what people notice. This year I'm more effective in front of goal.

"My target was to match last season's figures as soon as possible. That's now happened and from here I'm looking to get more and keep contributing in any way I can."
