Valverde: "We want to finish the year well"

The coach spoke ahead of Wednesday night's clash between the Lions and UD Las Palmas (21:30 CET)

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde is keen for his side to carry on their good form and see out 2023 on a high while warning he expects a tough test against a UD Las Palmas side that "play good football with a clear style".

Despite the late midweek kick-off time, Ernesto is certain thousands of Athleticzales will brave the cold to cheer on their Lions.

"It's true we're playing a bit late, but I think there will be a good atmosphere at San Mames - as there always is," the gaffer said at his pre-match press conference before Wednesday's match in Bilbao (21:30 CET).

"We hope to connect with the people who come to see us, give them something to smile about and finish the year well."

After achieving a massive 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday, the Zurigorri are full of confidence.

Valverde said: "You always have to take the positive from these moments and use it your advantage. There are games which really help you move forward.

"But you also need to know how to deal with the things that aren't quite right because we all know how quickly everything can change in football.

"The time last year we were also doing quite well. You have to keep improving every match, no matter what. But in general we're in a good place."

The boss described Las Palmas as an "important opponent" and a "daring side" as Los Leones prepare to face García Pimienta's outfit.

"They have different strengths compared to Atlético Madrid. They are having a great season and are one of the suprise packages along with Girona FC," he added.

"They're a newly promoted team with 25 points and they play very well. They have a clear style and are second in terms of fewest goals conceded this term."
