Alavés kicked off the competition with a 0-10 victory over Deportivo Murcia FC. In the second round they overcame a tricky tie against Terrassa FC, winning 0-1. In the third round, they hosted Real Betis at Mendizorrotza, prevailing 1-0 thanks to a Carlos Benavidez strike.
