Núñez: “I've come to help Athletic achieve its goals”

Centre-back Unai Núñez stressed he is back with the experience and mindset to help his boyhood side Athletic Club in any way he can.

The Lezama product has returned to Bilbao on a season-long loan deal from Celta Vigo two years after moving to the Galician club.

"I'm very happy to be back in a place I consider my home," Unai said at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

"From the outside you see things differently and I think I've gained experience that will be very useful for the team. I come with the mindset of helping the squad achieve our objectives and to do my best through hard work.

"I'm coming back to Athletic to help my boyhood club and my team-mates, who are my friends."

In a season which will see a significant increase in the number of fixtures, the defender is keen to compete for a place and play as many matches as possible.

He said: “The team looks very good, there's an incredible squad and it's a long year, with many competitions. The team is going to function well, I'm convinced of that. We have to keep working hard and I'm sure that everything will keep getting better.

"I couldn't wait to come back and play in European competition. We can't be satisfied with what we have achieved and we're aiming for more."

Having joined Lezama as an 11-year-old, Núñez admitted he was delighted to watch the Zurigorri win the Copa, even if it was from a distance.

"I watched almost all of Athletic's matches, from home just like any other fan, and I enjoyed it a lot," the defender added.

"To see how they won the Copa was a huge joy, especially as it was something they'd been chasing for a long time. I was very happy for my teammates, for the club, for the fans, for everyone."
