Valverde: "We played very well"
This is what the gaffer said to the press after Athletic's 3-0 Europa League win over IF Elfsborg
Ernesto Valverde admitted to being very pleased with Thursday's 3-0 victory over IF Elfsborg at San Mames in the Europa League.
Goals from Adama Boiro, Beñat Prados and Gorka Guruzeta steered Athletic Club to a dominant win which consolidates the Lions' position at the top of the League Phase standings.
"It was a good game for us. We knew what the points were worth and and we never underestimate any team," Valverde said post-match.
"We have to respect every opponent. We went for the game without letting them attack us and our pressing after losing possession was very good.
"The early goal opened up more opportunities because we gained confidence and the opposition lost confidence. With the third we felt we dominant, we didn't do much more, but we played very well.
"We're happy because a lot of players excelled this evening."
The gaffer praised the Lions' performances in the Europa League this season, saying the team is "on a good run".
He said: "You never know how matches and competitions can go. There are times when you can stumble.
"We're in a good position, we're on a good run and our intention is to keep trying to get more points. It's clear that if we're up there it's because we've been doing well."
