De Marcos: "We need everyone on top of their game"
The Athletic Club captain and head coach Ernesto Valverde spoke to the media ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash with Viktoria Plzen
Athletic Club captain Oscar de Marcos said the Lions have "a lot on the line" as they prepare to host Czech outfit in a pivotal Europa League clash at San Mames.
At least a point would be enough to guarantee Athletic a place in the round of 16, and thus avoid an extra play-off.
"This match is our absolute priority," said the Zurigorri captain.
"We know that a point would be enough to qualify directly for the last 16, but we're playing at home and we're determined to win. A victory would clear our schedule in February and give us a chance to rest."
De Marcos took the opportunity to send a message to all Athletic fans when asked about the current atmosphere at the stadium.
He said: "Every single person that forms part of Athletic is necessary. We all need to be on top of our game to achieve our objective, which is to qualify for the round of 16 and keep advancing in the competition.
"We have to be at 100% on the pitch, but you get 110% from San Mamés with that atmosphere that has always lifted us and we hope it stays that way."
Valverde said that although the club's main objective was to go beyond the league phase, ‘the team has earned the chance to fight for a direct ticket to the last 16".
He added that Viktoria Plzen are "a very strong side" and the squad must focus all their thoughts on the match.
"Thinking about other issues is unhelpful for us," the gaffer continued. "People will connect to the game if we are connected on the pitch. That's the message we want to send to the public, we have to get the stands onboard."
